The description and thorough analysis of the distribution and changes of population are one of the backbones of all human-related spatial analyses.

A broad overview of population background data is presented here in three sections, using NUTS-2 level maps for clarification. Besides the Member States of the European Union, the regions of the candidate countries (CC) are also included in the analyses.

First of all, population density in the regions is analysed. Next, population change is dealt with by examining the crude birth rate, the crude death rate, the crude natural population increase and the crude rate of net migration. The following section covers the so-called dependency ratios, in particular the young-age dependency ratio and the old-age dependency ratio. Finally, this chapter ends with a short description of the population pyramids of the EU and the CC, both as a whole.
