Como
Como Como, with its evident Roman imprint and its monuments that testify two thousands years of history and architecture, is the city of silk and commerce. A people-friendly town, open to the future, main centre of a wide province which includes, in the south, the green region of Brianza, "the land of furniture" of Canturino, the small lakes of Pariniana, the pine forests and the moors that, in a labyrinth of well preserved paths, reach the borders of the province of Varese; and, in the north, the great lakes Lario and Ceresio, and valleys and mountains that, initially gentle, successively become more and more alpine-like. This is a rich province, where shipyards, silk factories, furniture stores and mechanical industries are the local economy's points of strength, whereas tourism is the jewel in the crown.
Lario is one of the first lakes of this region that turned into a holiday destination.
Mountains mirror in the stretches of water; all around, a series of tiny and big Romanesque buildings: churches, monasteries, sanctuaries, small oratories (S. Lucio's, situated on the homonymous Pass, is very suggestive), jewels like S. Maria del Tiglio and the hidden S. Benedetto in Val Perlana, as well as other beauties scattered around Ossuccio.
Villas and Romanesque churches are indeed the main characteristics of this historical heritage that attracts a great number of tourists.
A beautiful land, a varied and amazing scenery of water and mountains, rich of natural, historic
al and artistic suggestions to be discovered through several itineraries: walking along the old "Via Regina" and the mountain paths, cruising the lakes by ferry or sailing boat, led by the winds called "Breva" and "Tivano", taking the funicular ( Brunate) and the cableway (Priga), to get to know this melancholic and imposing, severe and at the same time dream-like landscape. The Lake Como
The Lake Como measures 146 square kms and is the third biggest Italian lake after Lake Garda and Lake Verbano. It has a characteristic upside-down Y shape with Colico to the north Lecco to the south-east and Como to the south-west. Its perimetre measures 170kms. The maximum length between Como and Gera Lario is 50km; the maximum width between Fiumelatte and Cadenabbia is 4.4km; the minimum width between Careno and Toriggia measures 650mts; its maximum depth of 410 metres between Argegno and Nesso makes it the deepest of all the European lakes; its average above-sea level is 199mts. The lake is entirely surrounded by mountains, the highest being Monte Legnone (2609mt) above Colico.
There are 37 rivers flowing into the lake the most important being the Adda followed by the Mera. The Adda is also its only outlet. It flows out through Lecco and after having formed the lakelets of Garlate and Olginate it continues towards the Po river. The only island of the lake is Isola Comacina, situated in the Como branch of the lake opposite the commune of Sala Comacina.
